Sister. The original BK201. Alpha and omega; be-all and end-all. Pai is the prism by which to measure the full spectrum of Hei's cruelty, but also his kindness. Serene and sugar-sweet on the surface, she is the deadliest shape a catastrophe can take. The calm before a storm. Reunited after five years of warfare, every minute the siblings spend in the City is a bittersweet torture in the best way.

"Avatar." Thorn-in-side; ray-of-sunshine. What began as a tango of clashes and calculation has warped into a disturbing simulacrum of a relationship. The cold-blooded part of Hei tries to keep her at a distance. But to his irritation, he's alternately drawn to, and protective of, Korra's mix of brashness and vulnerability. She's made pop songs from his security systems and white chocolates from his lies. Theirs is a fling that risks ending in a fall without a sound -- but with plenty of bruises and blood.

Doll. Teammate. Mission Control. Living-breathing soft-spot. Over time, the rhythm of Hei's life has come to depend on Yin. In Tokyo, it was as a roadmark. In the City, it's as an anchor. A mix of compass and sanctuary, her nature makes it easy for him to relax his guard. She is an irreplaceable asset but also a stabilizing element. Hei's affection for her runs every risk of deepening into something permanent. Something that may leave its own translucent scars.

Spaceboy. Genius. Asset/Almost-Buddy. Initially, Hei's 'friendship' with Pavel was a matter of expedience. Pavel was bright, helpful and gullible - the makings of a perfect mark. However, time and circumstance have blurred Hei's sharp divides. These days, it's dangerously easy to consider Pavel a friend. In many respects, the two are polar opposites. Pavel swims in an idealistic fishbowl. Hei is dosed in bitter shots of past regret. But they share a common ground: science and stargazing. (Nerd) alliances have been based on flimsier stuff.

Gangster. Entrepreneur. Crackshot. And a snappy dresser to boot. Isaak is the quintessential mob boss - charming and remorseless. This is precisely what makes it easy for Hei to shed 'Li's decoupage of innocent paper-planes. They both understand the cardinal rule of wetwork: Nothing is true. Everything is permitted. As long as their orbits don't intersect in-field, they're content to remain pleasantly mistrustful of each other. Nothing personal; just business - isn't that how it goes?

"Reanimate." Ballbuster. Parasite. As a pragmatist, Hei has little use for damaged goods. Small wonder that he feels a distaste for Carla -- and the spectrum of broken she occupies. Lewd and invasive, volatile and self-destructive, she's a walking reminder of the ugliness - the Syndicate lifestyle - he's left behind. A stupider man might be stirred to pity her. But pity is one more thing Hei has no use for. In his eyes, she is a bundle of dynamite, the fuse sparked by her own hopeless impulses. An explosion is just a matter of time.

Satan of Pride. Jester. City bicycle in technicolor. The Mad Hatter is a miasma of candy-apples and toxicity. Fortunately Hei has no interest in getting poisoned. Alternately flirtatious and antagonistic, ne delights in hitting his buttons, just as Hei banks on learning the patterns of nir own. Little signs are everywhere. Masochism, leech-like epenthesis, the corrosive marks of loneliness. All that's left now is the perfect moment to stop pulling his punches and unleash the punchline. For the grand finale, timing is everything, isn't it?

Archangel. Warrior. Cynosure. Alexiel bears an iridescent paradox: cold flames and white-hot starlight in equal measure. Steely and no-nonsense, she's one of the few people Hei respects in the City. (It certainly helps that she's easy on the eyes.) Her history intrigues him, but for once, he has no interest in prying deeper than necessary. As an ally and a sparring partner, he doubts he'll find a better match.

Scientist. Paranoid. Post-debacle wreckage par excellence. High-strung, zippy and altogether too quick to trigger, Marie is nonetheless a useful asset. Under the fault-lines of past trauma, there's a wealth of ingenuity and resourcefulness, thriving in the dark, dazzling just out of sight. For the moment, Hei is content to keep her under surveillance (and to not trash her lab). As long as she keeps her trigger-finger and her bullets away from Korra.

Firebender. Streetkid. Cop-in-progress. Alert and pugnacious, Mako's attitude belies a protective streak that's easy to spot -- and to exploit. For now, Hei prefers to keep him at a distance. Yet-another element in Korra's unstable Love Dodecahedron, his arrival complicates an already-tangled relationship with the Avatar. But Hei's focus is on eliminating professional risks, not romantic rivals. As it is, the situation gushes disaster like a mushroom-cloud -- with bodies just waiting to hit the floor.

Attractive and bubbly, Lucy's friendship with 'Li' serves mostly to solidify his cover as a normal boy. Still, something tells Hei this isn't the first time she's unwittingly allowed a dangerous monster into her social circle. There's a thousand-and-one stories in the City. Most of them have a dismally familiar ending.
